As you might guess, the brand was founded by Helly Hansen, who had a passion for sailing. He made his first voyage at the age of 15 as a cabin boy. After 10 years he returned to the water, already as a captain. He was known for not being afraid of hurricanes, storms or even hopeless weather conditions. It was Helly Hansen who came up with the idea of an innovative waterproofing treatment that made his clothes water-repellent without losing their softness. The renowned sailor began to soak his garments in linseed oil. As a result, sailors were able to use their jackets throughout the season, and not just for one voyage. Since 1877 the brand has patented numerous technical materials and contributed to the development of the tech-wear trend. Even Virgil Abloh himself was unofficially inspired by the HH STRIPE mark patented by Helly Hansen over 40 years ago when he created the Off-White logo.
