THE HISTORY OF VANS

The Vans brand was born from a passion for footwear and street spirit when Paul Van Doren opened a store combined with a factory, creating a space where ideas quickly became reality. Collaboration with skateboarders resulted in unique shoes that quickly won the hearts of skateboarders, surfers, and musicians. Vans became not only a symbol of streetwear but also an integral part of street culture, gaining recognition among people who live by their own rules.

1966

On March 16, brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren along with their business partners – Gordon Lee and Serge Delia – opened the doors of their California store, The Van Doren Rubber Company, in Anaheim for the first time.
Thus, the Vans #44 model was born, now known as Authentic.

1970

By the early 70s, skateboarders throughout Southern California were already seen sporting Vans shoes, which were loved for their solid construction and good grip.

1976

Designed by Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, the Vans #95 shoes, now known as Era, with a padded collar and various color combinations, become a favorite model of an entire generation of skateboarders.

The Vans “Off the Wall” logo debuts.

1977

The Vans #36 model, part of the Old Skool collection, featuring the now-iconic Vans side stripe, makes its debut. Old Skool shoes are the first Vans models equipped with leather panels, providing even greater durability. The famous side stripe originally emerged as one of Paul Van Doren's random doodles and was named the “jazz stripe.” Today, it is a widely recognized Vans trademark.

Also, the Vans #98 model appears, and thanks to skateboarders and BMX enthusiasts, slip-on shoes from the Vans Classic Slip-On collection become popular in Southern California – many generations also regard this style as iconic.

This is how the iconic Vans legacy began; over the decades, they have stamped their identity and expanded their product offerings with new shoe models as well as new apparel and accessory lines.
And what does the Vans brand look like today?

2024

Recently, Vans launched a new campaign - "ALWAYS PUSHING", emphasizing the pillars on which the brand is built (Skate, BMX, Surf, Snow) and showcasing its street nature combined with an artistic soul. On social media, you can see reels featuring familiar faces in the skate world such as Zion Wright, Etienne Gagne, and even Atiba Jefferson (professional photographer). The campaign aims to reintroduce the Vans brand to existing customers and attract entirely new audiences with a refreshed visual message that is truly OFF THE WALL! From Vans' archives, new shoe models have been revived: the Mixxa, Upland, and Hylane. In the end, Vans is about freedom, connections between people, and fun – after all, why write more when you can see it for yourself.
