THE NORTH FACE HISTORY
In 1966, young climber Doug Tompkins and his wife Susie invested their savings to start something groundbreaking. They opened a small shop with climbing equipment in San Francisco called "The North Face." The store quickly transformed into a cultural space, with Grateful Dead performing live, Beatniks exchanging new ideas, and American climbers visiting after conquering routes in Yosemite.
The name "The North Face" literally means "north slope." It was inspired by the north face of the Eiger, considered one of the world’s most challenging climbs. The brand’s logo refers to the shape of the granite rock, Half Dome (Yosemite National Park).
The company’s first groundbreaking product was the Ruthsac backpack released in 1969, featuring an internal frame. Its advantages were its light weight and multiple practical pockets.
In 1975, the company launched the dome-shaped tent Oval InTENTion, known for its durability against wind.
In 1976, the brand launched its own laboratory, where the membrane material GORE-TEX® was developed the following year. In 1985, The North Face introduced a waterproof jacket based on this material.
In the 1990s, the brand became popular among New York rappers. This caught the attention of streetwear brand Supreme, which collaborated with The North Face in 2007.
In 2024, the company launched a campaign under the slogan "We Play Different."
The North Face has become a global brand for outdoor apparel and equipment, trusted by skiers, snowboarders, surfers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
