The Story of Go Skateboarding Day

June 21 marks Go Skateboarding Day – the global holiday that’s been bringing skateboarders together in the streets for years.
It was created in 2003 by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) to show the world that skateboarding is more than just a sport – it’s a lifestyle for everyone. The goal was to create space where people could ride, have fun, and share the stoke – no judgment, no limits.
The first official event took place in 2004 at the Etnies skatepark in Lake Forest, California. Top brands like Emerica, Vans, èS, Birdhouse showed up, along with legends like Tony Hawk, Ryan Sheckler, and Heath Kirchart. That same year, Emerica launched the first ever “Wild in the Streets” event in Philadelphia, where thousands of skaters literally took over the city.
The movement kept growing. By 2006, over 350 events were held across 32 countries, and in Brazil alone, over 25,000 skaters rolled through the streets. In 2007, the IASC even received special recognition from the U.S. Congress for promoting physical activity and skateboarding among youth.
Today, Go Skateboarding Day is more than just a date. It’s a reason to drop everything, grab your board, and hit the streets – whether it’s your local spot or just cruising through town. It’s a celebration of freedom, creativity, community, and good vibes that unite skaters everywhere.
You don’t need to race – you just need to ride.
