THE HISTORY OF ETNIES

Etnies is one of those brands that didn’t enter skateboarding for the trend – it helped build it from the ground up.

The story starts in 1986 in France, when the scene was still raw and skateboarders were destroying regular tennis shoes that fell apart after a few sessions. Out of that frustration came the idea: create shoes designed specifically for skateboarding.

The key figure was Pierre André Sénizergues – a former pro skater who took over the brand and moved it to the USA, building the entire Sole Technology empire around it. Importantly: it was the first skate shoe company owned by a skateboarder, not a corporation.

The breakthrough came quickly. Already in 1987, the Natas model dropped – widely recognized as the first-ever pro model skate shoe, changing the way skate footwear was designed. Then came more classics like Rap, Sal 23, and later signature models – all built for actual skating, not just looks.

Etnies has always been driven by its team. Over the years, riders like Ryan Sheckler, Elissa Steamer, Chris Joslin and Andy Anderson were part of it – each bringing their own style and pushing the brand forward. A key moment was when Elissa Steamer got her own pro model – opening doors for women in skateboarding.

In 1995, Etnies released the video “High 5” – the first full-length skate film created by a footwear brand, which was a major turning point for the entire scene. Featuring a legendary lineup (including Koston, Muska, Penny), it set new standards for brand videos and had a real impact on the direction of skateboarding in the years that followed.

The brand goes beyond shoes. In 2003, Etnies opened one of the largest free skateparks in California, supporting the scene in a real way, not just through marketing. Add to that initiatives like “Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree” – millions of trees planted and a step toward doing things more responsibly.

Today, Etnies is a mix of heritage and progression – from raw Paris street spots to the global scene. One thing hasn’t changed: it’s still a brand built by people who know what grip feels like after hours of skating. And you can see it in the current lineup – models like Marana Michelin have become a benchmark for durability, while more lifestyle-driven Jameson 2 Eco proves you can combine skate function with everyday style and a more eco-conscious approach. The team today includes names like Andy Anderson, Nick Garcia and Barney Page, along with Polish rider Weronika Choromańska.

Etnies doesn’t chase hype – it sticks to its lane. And that’s exactly why it remains one of the most credible brands in skateboarding.
